I Miss Grandma...A Hug in Your Heart

My girls have been having a hard time since Grandma Sherie went home to Heavenly Father.  I figured I should write these things down so that my girls and I can remember how we were comforted when we were sad.

Dear sweet Katie had a very hard day when her grandma passed away.  She cried for a very long time.  She kept saying how much she was going to miss her and how she kept thinking of all the nice things Grandma has done for her.  A few weeks after the funeral I got a call from the school.  My heart always skips a beat when I see Mountain Trails Elementary show up on my caller id.  Wondering if something may be wrong with one of my girls.  I answered the phone and Katelyn in tears said, "Mommy, I'm having a hard day I miss Grandma so much."  I felt so sad for her and just wanted to go give her a big hug.  She only had about 2 hours left of school so I told her I know how much she misses her and I miss her too.  I told her that when I feel sad and miss Grandma I always say a prayer and I feel better.  I reminded her that Grandma is always with us and that just because we can't see her doesn't mean she isn't with us.  I asked her to pray to see if Heavenly Father could make her feel better and that she could feel Grandma by her.  She said, "Okay Mommy I can say a prayer."

When she got home I gave her a big hug and asked her if praying worked.  She said, "Yes, Mommy!  It worked I said a prayer and Grandma came and gave me a big hug in my heart."  Teary eyed I gave her a big hug and told her how much I loved her.  We talked a little bit more about Grandma and where she was.  I told Kate that Grandma was called on a mission to serve Heavenly Father.  We talked about Uncle Timmy and how right now he is a on a mission and we can't see him but we know he is doing the Lord's work and that he is happy.  We talked about how much Grandma Sherie loved the gospel and that she was so happy to be on a mission in heaven.  And even though we can't see her or talk to her she can come and be with us sometimes when we need her.  She said, "Yep all I have to do is say a prayer and Grandma will give me a hug in my heart."  I love that!  What a comfort that is that Grandma Sherie can give us a big hug in our hearts whenever we need her.

Mayli tends to act out when she is sad and lately she has been having a hard time.  I haven't realized that it may be because she missed Grandma.  Today she had her breaking point.  We were heading off to bed and she started crying hard.  I asked her what was wrong and she said, "I miss Grandma so much!"  I gave her a big hug and before I could say anything Katelyn chimed in, "Mayli just say a prayer and Grandma will give you a hug in your heart."  Mayli said okay I'll go pray and off she went to say a prayer.  She must have felt much better because by the time I went to go check on her she was already fast asleep.

My sweet girls loved Grandma Sherie and everything she would do for them.  I hope that they can remember her always and I hope that I can teach them about her and her legacy.  I'm so grateful for the gospel and the Plan of Salvation.  And I'm so grateful for prayer.  And so grateful that whenever I'm having hard day I just need to say a prayer and Grandma Sherie can come and give me a hug in my heart.
Life is Beautiful!

{tears} What learning experience for them. I lost my Grandma to cancer too, and I remember my girls having a tough time. Death is a tough one for them to learn, I'll have to remember this.

Oh Dede... I also lost my grandma to cancer 20 yrs ago. I was only about 2 1/2 yrs older - maybe 3 yrs older than Katelyn was when my grandma died. So sad to hear how sad they are but, wonderful we have the gospel and prayer to help us. It's wonderful that Katelyn had her prayer answered.
